Imphal, November 10: Conservation works of the age-old Govindajee Temple located inside Kangla fort is almost complete while the task for reinstalling the two mythical Kangla Sha at the same complex is progressing favourably.

Almost 90 percent of the temple's construction work being taken up under the supervision of experts of International Council of Monuments and Sites (Icomos), India Chapter has been completed with the same work set for final completion within December this year, said State Archaeology source.

some part of the temple had crumbled in 2003 for which services of ICOMOS experts were roped in to restore the same structure with similar materials as was used when it is was first built.

Conservation works of the said temple began days after the historic fort was handed over to the people of Manipur in the presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Meanwhile, State artisans are informed to be working round the clock on a replica of the Kangla Sha to be installed near the entrance of the uttra.

The mythical animal is the State emblem of Manipur.

After completing preparation of the Kangla Sha replica, said to be 19 feet high, two permanent structure of the same would be constructed, the source informed adding that related works would begin under the guidance of three well known sculptors Mutua Bahadur, B Manihar Sharma and senior architect C Mangi.

Earth work (digging) of the inner moat at Kangla has also been completed with only finishing touches required which will also begin soon, said the source.

Similar progress are also being made on beautification tasks of the ground and other sites of the historic fort.
