As approved by its special assembly held on August 4 at Imphal, All Tribal Students' Union (ATSUM) has decided to postpone its indefinite agitation slated to begin from midnight of August 6 demanding resolution of various pending issues till midnight of August 11.If no tangible solution is brought about by the Government during this period, ATSUM would be compelled to boycott all Govt establishments, said a statement of the student body, adding that other form of agitations to be launched in this connection would be made known to one and all in the immediate future.
The 'unresolved and pending issues' that the student body had already raised with the Government include the issue of reservation of seats for SC/ST in the recruitment for MSC and other allied services, allotment of 12 posts to ST in the promotion of Jamadars to Subedars to recover the loss of 2 posts in the previous promotion, formation of a high level committee to look into the grievances of the tribal students in Manipur University has agreed by the State Government, extension of the services of those teachers appointed for schools in the hills area on contract basis, imposition of Meetei Mayek in the hill areas, resolving the issue related to alleged denial of PDS items to Churachandpur district and considering the request for setting up the proposed NIT in one of the hill districts.
The statement further informed that the August 4 special assembly of ATSUM unanimously approved the candidature of G Ningthaodai of Tamenglong and Ngaranchui Shimray of Ukhrul as the assembly speaker and assembly secretary respectively and they shall hold the offices till the term of the present executive is over.
