Minister for Irrigation and Flood Control Department T Phungzathang Tonsing said the Khuga Multipurpose project would be completed by December this year.
The Minister who was in Delhi recently on official visit, recalled that construction of the project was being taken up by two reputed construction companies.
He also stated that Thoubal and Dolaithabi projects are slated for completion in 2007-08 for which construction activities of these projects are in progressively.
People heard stories about Khuga Multipurpose Project, Thoubal Multipurpose Project and Dolaithabi Barrage very long back but couldn't see it.
Now things have changed due to sincere and committed effort of the Secular Progressive Front Government led by O Ibobi Singh, an elated Phungzathang said and exuded confidence that these dream projects will come into reality
shortly.
To complete these long pending multi-purpose projects is a great challenging task of the present govt which was installed on March 7, 2002.After the Secular Progressive Front Government came into power, subsequent discussions were held at different levels for completing these long suspended projects.
After obtaining assurance from the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during his visit to Manipur in November 2004, the State Government submitted an action plan to the Planning commission and the Ministry of Water Resources to complete Khuga Project in 2006 and Thoubal and Dolaithabi in 2008.Subsequently, the Centre funded sufficient amount for completion of these projects.
Main activities of the Khuga Multipurpose Project during the last four years concerns construction of earth dam, spillway and guide wall across Khuga River at Mata 7 km south of Churachandpur town, construction of power house and fabrication of pipes, and development of canal system.
The benefits of the project are creation of 15,000 hectare of irrigation potential, providing 5 MGD of water supply and generation of 1.75 MW of power.
The Thoubal Multipurpose Project envisages construction of an earth dam across Thoubal River at Phayang/Maphou, 35 km to the east of Imphal in the border of Ukhrul and Senapati districts and a barrage at Keithelmanbi, 17 km on the downstream of the dam.
The prospective benefits include facilitating irrigation of 33,400 hectare of agricultural land, providing 10 MGD of water supply and generation of 7.50 MW of hydro-power.
The Dolaithabi Barrage project envisages construction of a barrage across Iril River at Dolaithabi, 7 km to the north of Pukhao in Senapati District.
The benefit of the Project is creation of 7,545 hectare of irrigation potential.
