By the Fifth Five Year Plan, the State Government with the support of the Central Silk Board had started promoting Sericulture by introducing Oak Tasar during 1974 to 1979 seeking to increase employment opportunities and the income of the people.

Transparency would be maintained in the implementation of the project, which would be able to provide job opportunities to over 30,000 people, the Minister assured.
Sericulture is the only industries through which the economy of the State could be augmented, and the successful implementation of the project would ensure that Manipur is next to Karnataka in terms of Sericulture industries in India.
