Imphal, March 01:
Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat today informed the State Assembly that the process of drafting an Agricultural Policy of the State has been started with the main objective of preventing misuse of the agricultural land for nonagricultural activities.
Responding to a question raised by Heingang A/C MLA N Biren, the Minister said the policy envisages to prevent conversion of agricultural land into brick fields and setting up schools and colleges there-by reducing the available land area for the agriculture.
The Minister informed the House that the total area of cultivable land in Manipur on record is 2,34,025 hectares.
However, with encroachment on the agricultural land for the purpose of housing and other economic activities, it is not known how much area left for the cultivation nor a survey has been conducted in this regard.
MLA Biren opined that Manipur would become a dependent States on others if special measures are not taken up to save the available agricultural land from misusing.
He also agreed to the point mooted by the MLA.
