Ukhrul, November 29:
Amidst continuing negligence of the most remote border areas of Kamjong sub-division by the State Government for the last 25 years, Ukhrul District Community Resource Management Society (UDCRMS)/IFAD has established their concern by making a road stretch from Choithar to Khamkhui (British Road) via Gamnoum to Kachaouphung and Kashung crossing over 10 to 17 villages.
Along with visiting remote parts of this area like Chamu village under Kamjong sub-division, which have many potentialities and exquisite landscape for eco-tourism, is endowed with majestic waterfalls and Kachouphung Magi (lake), another hot spot for eco-torusim and view points into Ankoching range, Myanmar.
The area is also famous for varieties of citrus fruits, species of Sandalwoods, Teak, Khew and thick evergreen forest providing sanctuary to varied migratory birds and wild animals.
It is also a gate way to Myanmar through Homalin (Homeland) and can open links for cross-border trading.
However, these areas are still in a dark recess of time and seems to have little impact of the ever changing modern world.
Obviously this areas deserved a change and if roads are the indicator of development than definitely dilapidated roads of these remote areas require immediate attention from the State Government a well as from the central Government.
Talking with this correspondent, KS Ramrei, headman in charge of Chammu village stated that their areas were the remotest part in the entire district but the Government totally neglected to look after the basic requirements of the villagers for the last many years notwithstanding the sublime and scenic beauty of the area which makes it a hot spot for eco-tourism.
The tourism potential of the area, if properly developed, can benefit the whole state in more than one way.
He conveyed gratitude to the UDCRMS/IFAD for taking up the project to make the villagers' life line road from Gamnoum via Chammu to Khayang where the work is in progress.
He further added that this small initiative has the potential to make huge difference in the life of the villagers.
The major problem being encountered on the daily life of this remote area is lack of transport inafrastructure to connect around 17 villages and also further to Myanmar frontier where great vistas for business transaction exist.
The other basic infrastructure required to develop tourism in the area which is the home of the famous Tilly Waterfall, said to be the highest waterfall in Manipur at the height of 277 ft, is construction of a guest house.
Moreover this area being the place of Chammu Kazeiram (abode of the dead people) is closely linked with the mythology of the Tangkhul Naga besides having famous eco-tourism spot like Kachouphung Magi (Lake), Ankoching Range where the forefathers took it as the view points to Myanmar.
Chammu village has also historical importance as it was the British sub-Headquarter and Defense Line-3 during the 2nd World war.
Even as Sahamphung (Humlang) SDC Hqs was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Rishang Keishing way back on March 19, 1983 for better administration in the remote area, it is today non-functional and it is a nightmarish experience to reach the SDO office in Kamjong on foot given the horrible condition of the road.
