Imphal, April 29:
Keeping the agricultural land idle after harvesting until the next cultivation season is not the sign of a progressive mind and society, MLA of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency Keisham Meghachandra has stated.
Addressing as chief guest of the inaugural function of a one-daytraining programme for the farmers at Yairipok Khoirom Community Hall, Kangjeibung today, Meghachandra observed that until and unless the agricultural field are utilised efficiently instead of keeping them idle after harvesting and lying wasteland along the foothills are reclaimed for agricultural purpose, the problem of scarcity of food would not be able to solve at all.
Since there is no big industrial or mineral resources in Manipur, special thrust should be given in development of agricultural activities, he said while noting that instead of keeping the agricultural land and other area lying idle, the same could be utilised for cultivation of crops even during the off season.
The training programme was organised by Native-land Development Organisation under the sponsorship of Cotton Development Officer of State Agriculture Department.
Keisham Ibohal and Dr Thoithoi were among the resource persons who conducted the training programme on cultivation of maize and protection from pest.
The MLA also distributed seeds of maize and saplings of plantain among the farmers.
