Imphal, August 19: The Poumai Tsiidoumai Me (PTM) or Poumai Students Union has called off its proposed agitation which was to begin from August 21 following an agreement reached with government representatives today.

The PTM had earlier set August 20 as deadline for the state govt to do the needful in addressing hardships endured in "Poumai areas" of Senapati district.

Earlier on August 6 the PTM submitted a memorandum to the chief minister highlighting grievances of Poumai villagers.

Today's meeting was participated by Ministers K Ranjit, N Biren and DD Thaisii along with Chief Engineer (PWD) Ng Rastrapati, SE M Loken, Additional Director of Health Dr N Pratapchandra, Secretary of Health and Family Welfare P Vaiphei, SE (Power) Jadumani and EE of the Department Selungba representing the govt while the students' body was represented by its president and executive members.

The state government has agreed that power shall be supplied to all power-line strung villages of Poumai area within a short time.

As per the agreement Electricity Dept will take up action for electrification of 9 non-electrified villages in Poumai area.

The government also agreed that SDO of the Electricity Dept will be opened at Purul and Paomata Blocks with one SO posted there.

Compensation shall be given to the kins of four electrocution victims as per rules, according to the agreement of the meeting.

It was also agreed that the state govt will construct a pliable road from Tadubi to Laii and from Maram to Lakhammai.

Sufficient amount of fund shall be allocated in the next budget for the remaining portion for metalling the roads from Tadubi via Paomata to Phaibung and from Maram to Lakhammai.

the govt further agreed to post requisite number of employees in dispensaries of veterinary office in Poumai area and that works for development of infrastructure shall be taken up in the forthcoming budget session.

The govt also ensured regular attendance of SDO in Purul and Paomata along with the staff at the earliest possible time and that the posting of SDC of Phaibung shall be made immediately.

The Health Department officials informed about various infrastructures being constructed for PHCs at Paomata, Phaibung, Oinam hills and Laii.

It was decided to have a joint inspection of the infrastructures at these PHCs along with the Union leaders and the medical officers and other staff in the area on August 24.The inspection team may also incliude officials from the Health and Works Departments under the personal supervision of minister of Tribal Development DD Thaisii.

The Poumai students' leaders warned that in the event of failure on the part of the state government to translate its assurances into action within a short period, series of agitations will be launched.
