A two-day seminar on the role of Meitei Pangal/ Manipuri Muslims in fighting against the problem of drug menace in Manipuri society today has begun from today at Lilong Madrasa Alia, Lilong Bazar.
The seminar is being organised under the aegis of All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA).
The inaugural function of the seminar was attended by Commissioner of Labour, Government of Manipur AR Khan as chief guest, AMADA president L Tomba Meitei as functional president and Head Mudrish of Lilong Madrasa Alia Moulana Abdul Satar and Head Mudrish of Darul-Uloom Madrasa at Lilong Haoreibi Moulana Nizamuddin as guests of honour.
Giving the key note address of the function, chief convenor of the Seminar Organising Committee of AMADA Mayai Loishang Md Wahaj Phundremayum said the main objective of the seminar to facilitate joint discussion on the role that Manipuri Muslims can play in fighting against the problem of drug issue in the State today.
He further said that during the course of history of Manipur, courageous Manipuri Muslims have always played important role and contributed their mite for the welfare of the State, but today, they seem to have lost their courage due to various factors like economy, education, etc.
This has resulted in increasing number of drug related crimes and other related anti-social activities among the Muslim youths.
So along with discussion on the issue with the experts, the seminar would try to find out ways and means of fighting the drug menace, Wahaj said.
In his address, AR Khan pointed out that although Muslim religion prohibit consumption of wine and abuse of any other form of intoxicants.
But on the contrary, many Muslims are today indulging in drug trafficking and abuse.
Paying proper attention by the parents in bringing up their children would help in solving this problem to a large extent, he suggested.
Principal of Five Star English High School RR Sheikh, Dr Badaruddin, lecturer of Manipur College Janattun and Mufti Siraj of Darool Uloom Markaz were among the resource persons who presented their papers on the first day of the seminar.
