Moreh, August 17: Food and Civil supplies (FCS) Minister Y Irabot inspected developmental works being taken up at various locations of the border town today and expressing dissatisfaction over lack of quality control in some of the said works has strongly advocated constituting an expert committee to review the works.

The Minister was particularly upset on seeing sub-standard works in the building construction of the 400 metric tonne FCS godown here which is being carried out under the supervision of Manipur police Housing Corporation and is evidently in the final stage of construction.

The Rs 35.57 lakh godown was actually targeted for completion in 2005 but had to be delayed due to dispute over land acquisition.

Armed with hammer and heavy club Y Irabot, in the presence of department officials, checked the quality by chiselling and poking the floor, walls and pillars that ironically crumbled.

An agitated Irabot promptly announced that an expert panel would be set up for further inspection besides ordering that the building would not be handed over to the department concerned till approved or submission of report by the proposed committee.

Located about five kilometres from Moreh police station, the FCS godown when commissioned would facilitate storage of food items listed in the Indo-Myanmar trade provision.

The Minister also inspected works relating to construction of 4.78 kilometre long road from Lalkai Veng to near Moreh Gate No 1 which is being implemented by the MANIDCO under the funding of union Ministry of Commerce and Industries.

The said work, also nearing completion, consist of a weigh bridge and 13 culverts on the hill-slope.

irabot exuded confidence that once completed the road stretch could cut down traffic congestion which is inevitable as Moreh would be a vital point for the ambitious Trans-Asian Highway.

The export-import building of Moreh Land Custom was also covered during his inspection.

Before winding up the inspection for the day, the FCS Minister conveyed to reporters that a meeting of Industrial Growth Centre Development Committee would be convened on August 21 at Imphal to work out future developmental programmes.

He is also scheduled to attend a meeting of all community leaders to discuss development of the border town tomorrow.
