Imphal, December 11: Governor Dr SS Sidhu has paid his homage and tribute to those brave 'Imas' of Manipur both known and many more unknown who fought against the then colonial rule and monopoly trade interest of the Britishers for the cause of justice on the occasion of the Nupi Lan memorial which is being observed tomorrow.

In his message on the eve of the observance, Dr Sidhu said Nupi Lan is a unique historical episode in the history of Manipur which brings back to us the graphic memories of the courage and valour of Manipuri women and their spirit of patriotism.

Dr Sidhu said in Manipur, womenfolk play a vital role in all spheres of life and their role in socio-economic spheres is of special importance.

A child on their back, vegetable loaded basket on their head, a torch in their hands braving the cold wind of winter, severe heat of summer and heavy rains of monsoon, walking along the streets, sitting on the roadside selling vegetables for earning livelihood of their family, speaks of itself the important role of the womenfolk in the economic activities of the Manipuri society.

How Maharani Lingthoingambi, during the absence of the King defeated an invading army, speaks of itself the courage and valour of the Manipur women, the Governor said in his message, adding that today too, womenfolk have been playing a crucial role in all spheres of life and more particularly, in the removal of social evils.

Along with paying our homage and tribute to those 'Imas' let all of us join hands to make a peaceful and prosperous Manipur.

Only then, the celebration of Nupi Lan Day will be meaningful, Governor exhorted.

In his message, Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya said Nupi Lan reminds the courage and unit of Manipuri women and sets an example of the participation of Manipur women in social and political affairs.

The day would further the cause of women's empowerment now envisaged by the country, he added.

MPCC president Gaikhangam said the day remind us of the courage and spirit displayed by the women of Manipur in the uprising against the British rule in 1939.The observance of the day will inspire the present generation to love their motherland and work with sacrifice for the cause of the nation, he said in another message.
