Imphal, July 10:
Accusing Dr Laishram Sukumar for the death of six pregnant women during delivery under his medical attention and demanding stripping of the title of doctor from his name for good, the JAC has lined up protest sittings all over Manipur from July 11 till July 15.This will be followed by 24 hours State-wide general strike from the midnight of July 16 in case the JAC's demand is not fulfilled by the authority concerned before July 15.This was conveyed by N Dhanaprakash, convenor of the JAC Against the Several Deaths Due To Negligence of Dr Laishram Sukumar during a press conference at Manipur Press Club today.
He remarked that due to the discriminatory attitude and nepotism of some doctors, people have become more and more wary of men practising this most respected profession.
Citing numerous cases of deaths due to negligence of some doctors during delivery, Dhanaprakash accused Dr Sukumar of attempting to patch up things by offering Rs 30,000 to the family of Takhelchangbam Robin of Thoubal Wangbal Mayai Leikai through an ex-Minister after the death of Robin's wife Aruna Devi on July 29, 2004 due to the alleged negligence of Dr Sukumar.
He also mentioned five other cases of deaths under similar circumstances.
The JAC constituted in connection with the death of K Sunibala, together with the families of all the victims of Dr Sukumar have pledged to teach him a befitting lesson by stripping his title of being a doctor for his alleged discriminatory and indifferent to poor patients and their lives.
A memorandum was also submitted to the Chief Minister to this effect.
However, there has been no response from the Government as yet.
As such the JAC has decided to launch extensive protest sittings all over the State beginning tomorrow in association with numerous civil societies and women organisations of the State, disclosed the JAC convenor.
In case there is no positive action from the State Government even after the proposed general strike, the JAC has made all preparations to launch violent agitation in pursuit of their demand, said Dhanaprakash while seeking people's cooperation towards this end.
