Imphal, February 10:
Protesting the killing of one Shyamchand of Chalou in the encounter between Imphal East commandos and cadres of a UG group in the night of February 8 at Lamlai Keithel, a Wakat Meepham was staged today.
The protest sitting held under the aegis of the JAC constituted in connection with the killing was participated mainly by Meira Paibis of Lamlai and Chalou.
During the protest sitting staged from early morning till late afternoon, the protesters held placards that demanded befitting punishment to the commando personnel involved in the killing of Shyamchand.
On the other hand, the JAC and the family members are still refusing to claim the corpse of Shyamchand.
Till the time of filing this report, there was no sign of the JAC coming to any understanding with the State Government.
As such, it is reported that the JAC would call a 24 hours State-wide general strike tomorrow with effect from 5 am.
Nevertheless a team of JAC representatives made attempts to meet the Governor till late evening today, though without success.
In addition to the proposed extensive and massive protest sittings at different places under Lamlai Assembly constituency, the JAC had already warned of prohibiting all poll related activities in the Assembly segment in case no amicable understanding could be arrived at with the Government even after the general strike.
Speaking on the sideline of the Wakat Meepham, co-ordinator of the Apunba Lup Y Devdutta asserted that killing of civilian as well as UG cadres by security forces of a democratic country is a case of excess committed by security forces under the impunity guaranteed by AFSPA.
He contended that all the accused in the Mumbai blasts of 1993 and even all those involved in the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi were produced before Courts allowing the law to take its own course.
But Shyamchand was not an insurgent, he was only an innocent civilian.
Nobody would accept or tolerate such random and remorseless killing, Devdutta remarked.
Saying that people should continue raising their voices louder against such random killings and rampant violation of human rights by security forces, he pledged unstinted support from the side of the Apunba Lup to the JAC in all its movements against the killing.
