Imphal, May 09 2009: Governor Gurbachan Jagat has extended financial assistance to the victims of the tragic bus accident at Sungrunpang who are undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.

Atleast 12 passengers were killed, while 49 sustained injuries in the accident that occurred along Tamenglong-Khongsang Road in the morning of May 7 .

Out of the 49 injured, 26 of them have been admitted at RIMS Hospital.

The Governor yesterday handed over a sum of Rs 50,000 to the Medical Superintendent (MS) of RIMS as assistance for treatment of the injured victims.

Out the total amount, after deducting Rs 20,374 as medical expenditure account produced by RIMS, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr Y Mohen handed over the remaining amount to the Voluntary Help Unit of RIMS.

Talking to mediapersons in this connection, Dr Mohen pointed out as the medical budget of the hospital where around 30,000 patients are admitted is very limited, it is difficult to ensure free medicines to all the patients.

Even then, the hospital has extended every possible assistance towards the victims of the tragic bus accident.

The required antibiotics for treatment of the injured had been arranged from the side of the Voluntary Help Unit, he informed.

While expressing gratitude to the Governor for the financial help, Dr Mohen also hailed International Red Cross Society, Manipur State Branch for providing 138 units of blood for the injured victims.

Reacting to a letter published in the editorial page of this daily (Manipuri edition) today, Dr Mohen explained that besides life saving drugs and certain types of drips, RIMS does not provide any medicines to all the patients admitted to the hospital.

The medical budget of the hospital is very limited.

In case of necessity, the provisions of medicines to be provided is determined according to condition of the patients.

Voluntary Help Unit president Subhas Moirangthem who was also present at the occasion informed that the State Government is yet to refund a sum of Rs 1.05 lakh that the Unit had incurred in the treatment of the Ragailong bomb blast victims.

He also appealed against undue interference of any UG groups in the developmental activities of RIMS.

Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Youth Front (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) has conveyed its condolence to the bereaved families of the 12 victims killed in the tragic bus accident.

It also prayed for quick recovery of those who sustained injuries in the incident.

The Front has also extended its gratitude to the Ministers, MLAs, other individuals, social organisations, churches and village authorities which have contributed at various levels toward the helpline set up for the victims.

In its appreciation, the Front mentioned the contribution of SP of Tamenglong and his escorts team, DC, 5th MR jawans, 11 AR in in particular.
