Imphal, June 03:
Four seed banks newly constructed at Ishikha having the capacity of storing 200 matric tonne each have been inaugurated today.
The seed banks have been constructed under the initiative of Social Alleviation for Human Resource Environmental Management Organisation, Manipur (SEHREMOM) with assistance from Agriculture Department, Government of Manipur and other private donors with the main objective of helping the farmers in increasing crop productivity specially Potatoes.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, Commissioner (Agriculture) Letkhogin Haokip mooted that such seed banks should also be set up for the benefit of the farmers in other parts of the State.
While pointing out that many developmental projects and office buildings taken up/constructed by the NGOs and the Government have come to nothing or destroyed after having inaugurated with great fanfare, Letkhogin hoped the project taken up by SEHREMOM would not meet such fate in future.
SEHREMOM chairman Yendrenbam Kiran presided over the inaugural function of the seed banks which was also attended by Joint Director of Agriculture Department RK Noyonsana Devi, Associate Professor of CAU, Imphal Dr L Nabachandra, Associate Professor Dr Athokpam Herojit and Associate Professor Kh Ibohal as guests of honour.
