Imphal, Aug 01: The 7th Handloom Day was observed today at Kangla hall under the aegis of Handloom Promotion Council, Manipur.

In recognition of their contribution towards promotion of handloom, 12 individuals/groups were conferred with Handloom Awards 2006.The observation was graced by Commerce and Industries Minister N Mangi, president of Manipur Industrial Union Sapam Chaothoi and chairperson of Manipur State Women's Development Corporation Limited Akoijam Mirabai as chief guest, president and guest of honour.

Those who were honoured with Handloom Promotion Awards 2006 for their dedication to the vocation included Hijam Malika of Mayang Langjing, Nganbi Yumkhaibam of Haoreibi Makha Leikai, Sorokhaibam Pramodini of Charangpat, Akoijam Jamuna of Taobungkhok Awang Leikai, Laishram Binodini of Phoudel Thoubal, V Alice of Toloi village, Ukhrul, Lalhil Lovy of New Lamka and Glory Vashum of Awontang Toloi village.

The awards were also conferred to Ibotonsana Girls' Hr Sec School, Uripok and Pari Imom Shindam Shang, Langjing for promoting handloom products as school uniforms.

Tailor Sanjenbam Nabachandra of Takyel Kolom Leikai who has been supplying school uniforms made of handloom products and Ningthoujam Manihar of Pishumthong Oinam Leikai who make looms and spindles were also felicitated with the same awards.

Speaking on the occasion, N Mangi said that the Union and State Govts have launched many schemes to promote handloom sector in the State and the country.

He mentioned some central sponsored schemes like the Deen Dayal Yojana, Handloom Weavers' Health Insurance Scheme, Mahatma Gandhi Baskar Biman Yojana and Shiksha Sahayog Yojana.

Despite these schemes, the weavers of the State are still enduring shortage of raw-materials and transport bottlenecks, said Mangi.

In an effort to ensure availability of yarns throughout the year, the State Government is working to upgrade Yarn Bank of Paona Keithel, he informed.

Mangi disclosed that he would propose for a separate Directorate of Handloom sector in the next cabinet sitting.
