Imphal, February 19:
The Zeliangrong Union of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland (ZUAMN) has expressed strong resentment against the decision of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) to go ahead with the proposed 1500 MW Tipaimukh Hydro Electric (Multi-purpose) project by floating tender notices on November 30 last year inviting prospectives bidders for Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC).
The ZU-AMN stated that the construction of the project would amount to wiping out rare fauna and flora from the region besides affecting numerous villages in the area.
It also recalled of February 5 memorandum submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee (Home Affairs) to put on hold process of tender notices when the Central team headed by Sushma Swaraj visited the State.
The Zeliangrong body alleged that NEEPCO had gone ahead to implement the project without taking into consideration the views and opinions of the concerned people who would be severely affected after the implementation of the project.
The ZU-AMN further contended that the move of NEEPCO itself amount to violating human rights and termed it as infringement upon the people of the area which cannot be tolerated.
It urged the state government to move in the upcoming assembly session and pass resolutions that the proposed project be stopped at any cost and warned of taking up strong agitations if necessary.
Tipaimukh Dam has been proposed to be constructed in the Manipur-Assam border where the Zeliangrong is community confined.
