Imphal, December 17: For the first time in the history of Chandel district, a Carol festival was organised at Maha Union School ground by HQ 26 Sector Assam Rifles and Nehru Yuva Kendra, Chandel yesterday.

In a statement today, PRO HQ IGAR (S) informed that the festival was the brain child of Commander of 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brig RA Lewis as Chandel did not have much scope of celebration and enjoyment for the local people in the Christmas season.

All other hill districts organised various festivals like the lemon festival, Orange festival, Winter festival, etc.

However, there is no festival organised in Chandel, the statement maintained.

There were more than 3000 participants from all near by villages singing Carol to glorify the forthcoming Christmas.

The function was attended by more than thousand people including village chiefs, students, ladies and children and it was huge success, the statement said, adding that DC Chandel Norbert Disinang and SP Chandel GB Sharma were also present at the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Brig Lewis urged the people to come forward and organise such events every year.

The people of Chandel thanked the Assam Rifles and assure they would continue with this type of festival in the years to come which has been made possible by the initiative of Assam Rifles, the statement added.
