Along with launching the Cargo Air Craft called 'India Post Freighter' service by the Department of Posts in the whole of North Eastern region including Manipur from today, a Cargo plane landed at Tulihal Airport here bringing mails from different parts of the world.
The freighter operation is said to be specially designed for the North East Region.
Announcing the launching of the service, Superintendent of General Post Office Imphal R Kumar has appealed to all concerned to exempt the postal service from the purview of the frequent bandhs and blockades being called in Manipur.
After the formal launching of the service jointly by the Minister of Communication and IT A Raja and the Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel at Guwahati Airport, a floral decorated Cargo Air craft touched down at the runway of Tulihal Airport here at around 2.30 pm today bringing mails and parcels from other parts of the world.

Addressing a press conference at his office later during the day in connection with the launch of India Post Freighter service, R Kumar informed that the Cargo plane having a total capacity of carrying 15 tonnes would be presently carrying only 1 tonne to and fro from Manipur.
While observing that postal service should be considered as one of the essential services and should be exempted from the purview of bandhs and blockades frequently being called in Manipur, he explained that apart from transporting life saving drugs, the service would ensure delivery of admit cards of the students, forms and money order to the right destination in the shortest time.
This service is a boon for the people of this remote and backward region, he added.
He further said that under a policy, the Government of India and the Department of Posts has taken the decision of operating the freighter air craft service to carry mails as well as logistic to and from the North East region which is lacking far behind the rest of the country in every aspects.
Along with the launch of the India Post Freighter service, the Department has also decided to launch a 'Logistic Post Air' till November 29 this year on promotional rates with facilities for airport to airport, city to city and door to door service, he added.
The Marketing Executive of Imphal Post Office who was also present during the press conference informed that through the facilities of Western Union, the Imphal Post Office has been able to deliver the money sent from foreign countries within a short time.
In India, a total amount of Rs 50,000 can be delivered within minutes of sending the amount.
The Post office has also extended the benefits of Mutual Benefits, he added.
The service will be available on the Kol-Ghy-Imp-Agr every day of the week except on Monday.
