Imphal, May 26:
Representatives of 32 womens organisations today demonstrated in front of the gate of the Chief Ministers bungalow demanding unconditional release of general secretary of UPF Ithai Zonal Council Laishram Premjit from jail.
Laishram Premjit is lodged in the jail after arrest by a combined team of 7 Assam Rifles and 100 Bn BSF on May 7 on charges of having link with UG group.
Around 50 representatives of various organisations descended at the gate of Chief Ministers bungalow at around 1.15 pm with the intention of submitting a memorandum demanding unconditional release of Premjit.
Even after security personnel who were on duty at the gate told them that the Chief Minister was not present, the agitating womenfolk insisted on hanging around there until the Chief Minister returned.
When top officials of Police Department arrived to the spot, the womenfolk were herded off from there.
But as they reached in front of Post Office, the womenfolk squated and staged a Wakat Meepham insisting that they would not go until the Chief Minister gave a definite response to their demand.
After almost an hour, police officials conveyed that five women representatives may meet the Chief Minister to submit their memorandum.
Consequently, Taruni, Radhesana, Thasana, Ibemcha and Memton stayed back while the rest were herded off till the nearby Nupi Lan complex.
However, the five women representatives were also reportedly denied meeting the Chief Minister by informing that he had already gone out on some important work.
Later addressing a hurriedly called press conference at the head office of UPF at Keishampat here, the agitating womenfolk strongly condemned the attitude of the Chief Minister in sneaking away without meeting them.
Setting June 2 as the deadline for releasing Premjit, they also warned of taking recourse to violent agitation if the Government fails to do so.
From the side of UPF, its secretary said the Front is prepared to mount pressure and launch violent agitation against the Government if Premjit is not released unconditionally within three days.
Coming out strongly against local MLA N Mangi for his alleged silence on the issue despite knowing Premjit is an innocent person, UPF has also announced to social boycott the MLA with effect from today.
The Govt should be held responsible for any eventualities of the violent agitation to be launched by the UPF and other women bodies, the UPF secretary categorically added.
