Delhi will give true account of Meghen to State Govt, says CM

Imphal, October 22 2010: Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has stated that the Centre would be providing a true account of the reported arrest of UNLF Chairman RK Meghen alias Sanayaima in Bangladesh to the State Government very soon.

Interacting with media-persons on the sidelines of an inspection tour of the construction works at Khwairamband Bazar today, the Chief Minister assured that RK Meghen being a Manipuri, his Government has started taking up necessary measures to know the truth.

The Chief Minister said that soon after hearing the news about the reported arrest of RK Meghen in Bangladesh, he was preparing to go to New Delhi to meet the Home Minister.

But the plan had to be changed on account of the visit of Home Secretary GK Pillai to Imphal.

Nonetheless, the matter has been taken up with the Home Secretary so that the Centre could tie up with the Bangladesh Government to find out the truth behind the reported arrest of the UNLF leader, the Chief Minister disclosed and expressed confidence that the Centre would be providing atleast some information very soon.

It may be noted that various political parties have also exerted pressure on the Centre to come out with an explanation over the reported arrest of RK Meghen by a combined team of RAW and Bangladesh Police from near Dhaka on September 29 last.

In response to a question, the Chief Minister observed that the Government is also not happy with the failure of resuming open sale of petrol and other petroleum products in Manipur although blockade along the National Highways has been lifted long ago.

Just wait and see what the Government would be doing in this regard, he added.

Manipur questions : Where is Meghen ? : Taking strong exception to the stoic silence mantained on the whereabouts of UNLF Chairman RK Sanayaima alias Meghen, for the last many days, the United People's Front (UPF) and the Nupi Samaj have cautioned that such clandestine attitude of the Government of India may evoke a massive uproar in the State.

Speaking to media persons at its office today, UPF president YK Dhiren decried the act of keeping Meghen's whereabouts a secret since his arrest in Bangladesh on September 29.This is an act of human rights violation and is against international laws.

Dhiren demanded that the Government of India should disclose the where-abouts of Meghen to his family as well as the people of Manipur without any further delay.

Failure to do so may spark a social uproar in the State, Dhiren cautioned while adding that the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh should be held accountable for the 'missing' of Sanayaima.

When the Government of India has the audacity to keep the whereabouts of a rebel leader a secret all these days, it is hard to imagine safety or security of the general public.

This is a clear testimony of the insecure environment under which the people of Manipur are living, Dhiren asserted.

Terming Union Home Secretary GK Pillai's ambiguous statements on Sanayaima's arrest as irresponsible, Dhiren remarked that Pillai was insincere and he was taking the people of Manipur for granted.

In another press meet held at Palace Compound today, Nupi Samaj general secretary Th Ramani observed that keeping Sanayaima's whereabouts a secret and then GK Pillai making irresponsible statements were only inciting the people of Manipur to launch a mass movement.

The Government of Manipur should communicate with the Indian Prime Minister and the Home Minister to ascertain the whereabouts of Sanayaima.

Otherwise, a massive upheaval may break out any time in the State, she asserted.
