Imphal, December 19: With the State Government introducing the Manipur Government Employees List to help it work out the figure of its employees by identifying fake appointments as well as to rationalise the transfer and posting of teachers, the number of employees has today come down to sixty thousand and eight hundred which is much lesser than the more than 80 thousand employees projected earlier.

The list of 60 thousand and 8 hundred is however not final as the process of listing the employees under MGEL is still underway.

Talking to The Sangai Express an official source said that ever since the MGEL was enforced, the Government has been able to identify a number of fake appointments as well as to work out a system to rationalise the posting and transfer of its employees.

The exercise was also taken up to ensure that the employees are posted at their parent department and not somewhere else.

It was during the implementation of the MGEL that the Government worked out the number of the bonafide employees at 60 thousand 8 hundred which is way below the earlier estimated strength of over 80 thousand, said the source.

However since some Government Departments have not been able to submit its final list to the Government, the actual number of the employees may change once all the lists are submitted.

As per the list submitted by some of the major departments, the number of the regular employees are given as 2,200 for PWD, 13,000 for the State Police Department, 3939 for Power DEpartment, 17,000 for PHED and 4100 for Health.

The major departments which are yet to finalise the list of its employees are Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, added the source.

The Government has set December as the deadline to complete the process of filing the employees list and strict instructions have been issued to the departments which have so far failed to work out the list.

The salaries of employees which have been put on hold pending the finalisation of the list will however be released till December.

However for employees whose status have been confirmed even if the department in which they are working have not been able to prepare the list, there will be no restrictions on withdrawing their salaries.

Employees whose status are unclear will be however barred from getting their pay.

This was in fact the practice followed earlier too.

The source further said that a thorough probe would be conducted to find out how the number of Government employees was above eighty thousand before the MGEL was enacted.

The source added that fitting action would be taken up against all those involved in wrongly appointing the excess employees. Stringent action may also be taken up to recover the money lost by way of meeting the salaries and expenditure of the excess employees down the years, said the source and added that even the employees whose status have been confirmed would be rechecked again.

A new verification drive would be conducted, informed the source.
