Water levels swell, flood situation still critical

Imphal, September 16 2025:
Even after large areas in Imphal East and Thoubal districts have been inundated, water levels of both Imphal River and Iril River have been rising steadily.
However, the water level of the Thoubal River is neither rising nor receding.
According to a daily flood report given by the Water Resources Department for up to 6 pm today, Thoubal River has been overflowing at different places.
Imphal River has been flowing above high flood level while Iril River is flowing above flood level.
High flood level of Thoubal River at Thoubal Bridge (gauge site) is 781.415 m but the river is flowing above the high flood level.
As such, the river is overflowing at different places.
The water level of Imphal River is also rising steadily.
The high flood level of Imphal River is 782.850 m but the river's water level reached from 783.300 at 10 am to 783.400 m at 6 pm today, thereby creating a deep sense of apprehension among a large section of people.
The water level of Imphal River at Lilong at 10 am was 783.300 m but it rose to 783.400 m at 6 pm.
The water level of Iril River at Irilbung Bridge remained unchanged at 788.000 m from 10 am till 6 pm today.
This is well above the flood level.
The water level of Nambul River is also rising steadily.
Its water level at Thong Nambonbi at 6 pm was 782.725 m .
This is also above the flood level.
The water level of Nambol River at Nambol Bridge rose from 773.850 m at 10 am to 773.900 m at 6 pm today.
The water level of Nambol River has crossed the flood level and it is approaching the high flood level.
Manipur River too was flowing above high flood level till 6 pm today.
The high flood level of Manipur River is 769.320 m but its water level reached 769.930 m at 6 pm today.
Nonetheless, the water level of Manipur River started receding slowly after 6 pm .
With almost all rivers of the State flowing at danger level and above and large areas including dwelling houses, roads, paddy fields and fish farms inundated, all the gates of Ithai Barrage have been opened.
Imphal Barrage has five gates and four of them are open.
Thoubal Barrage has nine gates.
Its gate number 5 and gate number 7 are open by 2 pm while the other gates are closed.
Rainfall rate at Imphal River basin (Kangpokpi) during the last 24 hours (6 am of September 15 to 6 am of September 16) was 23 mm .
Kangpokpi received additional 14 mm of rainfall from 6 am to 10 am today.
During this same period of 24 hours, Litan received 11 mm rainfall, Jiribam 30 mm, Raj Bhavan 29 mm and Lamphel 33 mm.
Meanwhile, our Moirang correspondent reports that all the five gates of Ithai Barrage have been pulled up by 8 metres.
However, water surfaces in both the upstream and downstream of the Ithai Barrage are on the same level at the time of filing this report.
Officials of Ithai Barrage said that, all its five gates will be kept open for some more days.
On the other hand, Kumbi AC MLA S Premchandra together with the local people strengthened the vulnerable embankment of Ithai Laikhong for a length of around 600 metres by piling earth last night.
Premchandra also went around and inspected vulnerable places.
He assured the people that he would provide all materials necessary to fight floods.
