Unidentified gunmen shot dead a rickshaw driver at RIMS Sweepers' Colony under Lamphel Police Station at around 9 am today.
The victim has been identified as Kakyenpaibam Rojen alias Pukchao (30) s/o late Achoubi of Konthoujam under Patsoi Police Station.
He was married to one Phalneichong alias Ibemhal (28) of Sugnu J Khumunom and they have three sons and one daughter.
They were earlier staying in a rented room at Uripok and it has been for the last one and half months that they have been living at the quarters of Phalnu, one of the aunties of Phalneichong at RIMS Sweepers' Colony.
Today morning, Pukchao was preparing to have his meal before going out for work when two unidentified gunmen came to quarter number 22 Type-II of RIMS Sweepers' Colony where he was staying.
The unidentified gunmen made Pukchao, Hemjang Haokip, husband of Phalnu and a contractor from Uripok identified as Jugeshore who was present at the quarters at that time and other family members including women and children to lie down on the ground.
Afterwards, the gunmen took out Pukchao, Jugeshore and Hemjang from the room.
After taking them some 200 feet from the quarters, the unidentified gunmen shot a bullet on the head of Pukchao.
Jugeshore managed to escape from there while Pukchao was being shot.
But Hemjang was set free without any harm.
It is said that there is a case dating back to 2006 while Pukchao was staying in the rented room at Uripok in which he quarrelled with some people after his rickshaw rammed against a person.
In that incident, Pukchao was hit by a brick on his head and he under-went treatment at a private hospital till February this year.
But he allegedly left the hospital without paying the charges for treatment which amounted to around Rs 70,000.A case had been registered against him with the police in this regard.
