Hospital closes to protest unprecedented killing of patient inside Surgical Ward

In an unprecedented incident, unidentified gunmen shot dead a patient inside the RIMS Surgical Ward this morning at around 5.30.The victim has been identified as Ngangom Santosh alias Sanjoy (25) so of Munal of Heingang Awang Leikai but residing at a rented house at Kangjabi.
He is survived by a wife and two children.
Sources said that the patient had been under going medical treatment at RIMS after being shot by unidentified gunmen at Kangjabi Leirak under Imphal PS on April 15 and further said that Santosh's condition had considerably improved after the treatment.
Taking everyone by surprise, two unidentified armed persons barged into the RIMS Surgical Ward where he was sleeping and pumped in three bullets without saying a word.
Santosh who received bullet wounds on the right jaw, chest and on the right arm died instantly.
Immediately on hearing the gun shots, security guards present at the RIMS Complex instantly reacted and closed all the main doors of the hospital to cordon off the gunmen.
However the gunmen managed to give the slip and escaped through one of the doors which was un-manned.
Following the incident, RIMS Casualty and OPD remained closed from 11.45 and will continue to remain shut for the next 48 hrs as a mark of protest against the brutal killing.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Committee of the Association of Junior Doctors, House Officers and Intern Association and Post Graduate Students Welfare Committee RIMS and Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Students Union while strongly condemning the killing have appealed to the organisation concerned not to repeat such act in future.
The victim's body was handed over to family members after post mortem at RIMS morgue today.
Sources said that Ng Santosh was a former cadre of an underground outfit and was arrested by the Assam Rifles in 2001.Meanwhile, RIMS Director Prof L Fimate has also appealed to one and all not to commit such acts inside the Hospital complex in future.
He further stated that hospital is a place for treating the sick and ailing patients and therefore attacking a patient cannot be justified at all.
According to another report, the identity of one of the youths who was gunned down by police commandos at Keibul Sangram under Moirang PS yesterday afternoon was established today.
The youth has been identified as Loitongbam Bhimo alias Sunil alias Albas (28) of Sekmaijin Khunou Litan Makhong.
