Imphal, December 17:
Attended by women leaders of various communities living in Manipur, the one-day conference on crimes against women in the society held at MDU Hall here today has adopted nine different resolutions.
The nine resolutions are instituting an all-women member State Women Commission which should be an autonomous body with adequate power, strengthening the existing Family Court, effective functioning of the existing Family Counselling Centres in the State, setting up an all-women police stations, separate welfare policies for women, strengthening and judicious functioning of the Manipur State Human Rights Commission and speedy settlement of the women related cases.
The conference further resolved to put forward these resolutions to all authorities concerned for necessary action.
Speaking as resource person during the conference, L Mary Kom, who is a lecturer in Birmangol College, Sawombung observed that the problems of survival faced by the women in society begin right from the day of conceiving them in the womb of their mothers.
Citing the cases of female foeticide, discrimination against girl child while bringing up and education as well as in putting work pressures of the family, she said women came to know of the hardships of life right from an early age.
Apart from these problems, women are also being victimised and they have no one to listen to their grievances nor any place where they could lodged their complaints, she lamented.
Kangleichal secretary Elangbam Chanu Tamphasana contended that it is a misnomer to say that there is freedom for Manipuri women in the society.
Outwardly it seems that the Manipuri women are in the forefront of any major social movement, but in reality, their due place and contribution in the society have never been recognised, he maintained.
When we talk of crime against women in society, she further said, it would be wrong to count only rape, molestation and trafficking of women, without taking in consideration all sorts of violences being committed against them in the society.
In fact the root caused of all crimes against women originated from within the family itself, she pointed out.
To improve the status of the women in society, it is of utmost importance that the men should not only pretend to espouse the cause of the women but also show it through their deeds and actions.
The very fact that no commission for women in the State has been established and reservation 33 percent of the seats in Parliament and the State Assemblies has not been implemented shows the kind of concern men have on women issues, she said.
Social activists like MC Rita, L Goria Kom, etc were also among those who spoke during the conference jointly organised by All Manipur Muslims Womens Development Organisation, Kuki Mothers Association, Kabui Mothers, Association, AMKIL, WACAK, MEEKHOL, Kangleichal, Ching-Tam United Womens Association, Nupi Samaj, Tammi-Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup.
