The Gopal Sharma Award for the year 2025 has been conferred to Manipuri writer Raghubir Thiyam during a presentation ceremony held at Manipur Press Club, Friday. The award carrying Rs 15,000 cash, citation and shawl is presented every year on World Poetry Day in commemoration of former editor of Poknapham daily (late) Shamurailatpam Gopal Sharma.
The award ceremony organised by Sahitya Thoupang Lup, Imphal was attended by ASHEI-LUP Manipur president Dilip Mayengbam as chief guest and Loktak Khorjei Lup president Birbabu Laishram as president.
In his address, Dilip Mayengbam expressed happiness over conferment of Gopal Sharma Award to writer Raghubir Thiyam. He remembered Gopal Sharma as a person who found happiness by mingling with writers, novelists and poets.
Late Gopal Sharma was honoured by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching for his contribution to Manipuri literature, he said. The highlight of the event was World Poetry Day celebration with reading of poems by 32 writers with noted writer Doneshwar Konsam in the chair.
A book titled 'Utangbigi Lamdamda-2' penned by Thokchom Dolarsen was also released at the event.
Gopal Sharma Award recipient Raghubir Thiyam was born on November 26, 1946 at Yairipok to Thiyam Birmangol and Tombi Devi.
In recognition of his dedication to Manipuri literature, Raghubir was conferred Kabya Bhusan by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal in the year 2014 and Chingkhu Moirang Leima Ningshing Mana by Sahitya Seva Samiti, Kakching.
Raghubir has so far released 13 books and is currently lyricist and playwright of All India Radio (AIR), Imphal. He was also conferred RK Sanatombi Award-2000 .
