The Ist Guwahati Manipuri Literary Meet 2007, organized by Kamrup District Committee, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam was inaugurated at 10:00 hrs. with the lighting of the inaugural lamp by Prof. Hemant Kumar Sharma, retd. Director Education, Govt. of Assam at The premise of Beltola Manipuri Welfare Assn., Bakrapara.

Besides Dr. Phuritsabam Birmani, President, Kamrup District Committee, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam & Prof. Hemant Kumar Sharma, Retd. Director Education, Govt. of Assam, Shri Usham Durgabihari Singh, Ex-President, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Dr. Laishram Sukumar reknown Social Worker and Shri Yengkhom Manila Singh take the chairs on the Dias.

After the opening song presented by the Artists of Beltola Manipuri Welfare Association, the distinguished guests, the invitees and the august gathering were welcomed by Shri Yambem Lalbabu Singh, the President of Beltola Manipuri Welfare Assn. Shri N. Singhajit Singh, Secretary, Kamrup District Committee, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam delivered the Keynote address focusing on the importance of mother tongue in the changing scenario when every body is after the most hyped English medium Schools.

Kamrup District Committee, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam felicitated Shri L. Nilmani Singh and shri Ibocha Singh on receipt of Sahitya Award 2007 and Sports Award 2007 respectively from the Govt. of Assam.

Also Parishad felicitated Smt. L. Karuna Devi who received Nritya Bhushan Award 2007 and Meghna Singha Hazari who was adjudged the Best Dancer at the All India Classical & Folk Dance Festival 2007, held at Cuttack in Oct.-Nov. 2007.

Shri K. Nilkanta Singh, General Secretary, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam also addressed the well attended gathering of the Manipuri communities from every corner of the city and spoke about the important role of the Parishad, especially in the cities like Guwahati where the Language is neglected not only in Schools and work places but even at home.
