Captain R.B. Pemberton has described this book as a Report on the Eastern Frontier of the then British territories extending from the North-Eastern region of India which extended even further into the Irawaddy Valley.

The book was first published in 1835. It gives an almost gazetteer-like account of the topography, the land routes, the commercial and military operations, the tribes, the kings and almost every available information on this exotic region which continues to be of great strategic importance to India even today as it was to the then British Government of India.

About the Author

ROBERT BOILEAU PEMBERTON (1798-1840) was son of John Butler Pemberton, Barrister, and, later, Rector of a parish in the W. Indies: entered the Indian Army, 1817, joining the 44th N.I.:

saw active service in Manipur, and employed there in survey and exploration work, and on similiar duties on the N.E. frontier:

Capt. in July, 1835 : was sent as a special Envoy to Bhutan, 1838 :

his reports on this State and on the N.E. frontier were, for a long time, the best information available to Government :

appointed Governor- General's Agent at Murshidabad, and died there, June 26, 1840 : was married to a sister of Sir D.F. McLeod (q.v.): and a daughter married Sir G. Yule (q.v.).
