Art exhibition “Art meets Fashion” emerges a new era in Manipur

The ongoing art exhibition titled ‘Art meets Fashion’ being held at Ningthibee building, Nagamapal Imphal from 24th November till 4th December 2018 is introducing a new era of art in Manipur. For the first time three very young contemporary artist; a painter, an illustrator and a fashion designer is coming together to give a taste of the native and avant garde to the art lovers of Imphal.

The exhibition is an amalgamation of paintings by Oinam Dilip, neo art installation by Kenny Ngairangbam and fashion-showcase by Sailex Ngairangbam in a lavish environment.

Oinam Dilip is a freelance artist currently based in New Delhi with a degree from Delhi College of Art. Having settled in Delhi for 18 years, Dilip says “my previous works were influenced by the metropolitan city for many years, dominantly influenced and controlled by sensibilities of contemporary South Asian art scenario. But I began experimenting with cultural and anthropological vibrancy of North East India. Hence, the current works on display concentrates on our roots, inspired by identity based iconic images, our environment and tangible cultural objects.­­”

For Dilip it’s his first show in Manipur while his paintings have been showcased along the paintings of some of India’s senior most artists in reputed art galleries of the country in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore and a few abroad. Just two months ago, a solo exhibition of the artist was sponsored by India International Centre New Delhi.

His paintings have been collected in Korea, UK, US, Egypt and he proudly says “some are untracked”. Dilip is also currently working with Art Alive, one of India’s premium art Galleries in New Delhi. He says, “Painting is in my blood. I started doing art very early in life winning many accolades right from my school days.”

Kenny Ngairangbam started off as a freelance illustrator, an Art director in advertising in New Delhi and presently works as Co-Founder/Creative head of Kok designs Imphal. Kenny says, “My work is a confluence of tradition and modernity. For the last 5 years, I have been based out of Imphal, working on a series of contemporary art work and installation art that captures the essence of various cultures.”

His latest work, a neo-installation art, is based on his earlier work. It adopts the popular art of representing a mundane subject, like culture and tradition, in a highly appealing form, shape and colour. His work makes tradition vibrant and dynamic.

Sailex Ngairangbam, a graduate from NIFT and Domus Academy Milan is a Manipuri Fashion designer who is well known in the Indian fashion industry. He launched his eponymous label SAILEX in the year 2008 based out of Delhi at Lakme Fashion Week and have showcased at the same for over 7 years.

He has dressed prominent Bollywood celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Kareena Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh, to name a few and also has been selling his fashion label at leading multi-designer stores all over India.

With an upsurge readiness to experiment with offbeat career options by the young professionals from Manipur, such an event is expected to bring new exposures to art with most of the exhibits up for sale, rare take-aways for prospective buyers.

The event which is being managed by Sylvia Ngairangbam, a young dynamic CEO of KAI believes that organising such a show will boost the morale of other young artist in the state who are looking for a platform to showcase their talent.
