The article "What's in a name?" along with all the rejoinders to it have been pretty well written and well said in each of the writer's opinion. And my writing will also not differ much from all the views stated earlier.

Okay! We have to use the surname-name-gender identifier sequence, well and good. But why do it with all the Singhs, Devis, Kumars, Rajkumars and Sharmas? Why do we fail to remember our Sageis and clans? Why do we forget our Mangangs, Luwangs and Khumans and also the Ningthoujas? Ok! Ok! You may say what about female identifying suffixes? We do have them also, we can use Chanus before or after the name like Maibam Chanu Rohini or rather Maibam Rohini Chanu or Mangang Chanu Rohini. Why do we worry of what others think of us? If we are good enough then they will surely take out time to see if we are a male or a female. I don't agree with the point saying Singhs and Devis are suited for Manipuris. This is ridiculous. This has shown that that the writer's mind and soul has all been polluted by the Mayangnised culture as he himself calls it. I prefer to differ here and also know very well that there are also others who would like to differ. Whatever has been said and written here reflects the mentality of the writer.

During my MSc days in AMU, we had to bear all the mocking smiles and words of the mayang seniors just because we add Devi and Singh to our names. They said, are all Manipuri females goddesses? And if so then all the males there should be devas. Sarcastically they would turn to me and say if I am not a goddess as there is not Devi in my name. That did not make me feel bad rather I was proud of it and being a goddess or not that we have to show by our actions. Had my name been Meitram Bharati Devi, they would have called me Bharati Devi and won't even remember what is there in my full name before Bharati. Thanks to my name, they remember me as Miss Bharati Meitram and not as Bharati Devi, at least they can pronounce Meitram.

I don't want to force my opinion down everyone's throat round here but then I can't stand being a mere silent reader. I hope the future parents keep this in mind while giving names to their children. It is their choice whether to have name-surname way or the surname-name-gender identifier way but Singhs and Devis- God! Spare it. It doesn't beautify our names as put by another reader. Leave it for the Mayangs only; we have our own Chanus, Chas, Meeteis and what not. Search for it and you will find good words to be used as gender identifiers. As some well meaning poet has said 'Lairaraba eeron-ni khangdabana haibani'. Search and you will find real meaning gender identifiers that we can call our own. Now can we say a name can tell everything?
