The Impact of Insurgency on Political Accountability and Local Governance

The tragic reality in many regions, particularly in Northeast India and, more specifically, in Manipur, has remained unchanged for generations. For decades, this beautiful land has been plagued by insurgency, with local elections often falling under the sway of insurgent groups. Decision-making has been shaped by insurgent ideologies, while the struggles of the common people—who have suffered for generations—have been ignored. At the heart of these issues lie communalism and the widespread misuse of political power.

We have witnessed firsthand how the lack of rural development is a direct result of these factors. Elected officials often lack the authority to serve their communities, or worse, they prioritize their own self-interest and family-centric goals. This trend is evident throughout Manipur, affecting districts across the region. Political rivalries have grown so intense that they sometimes lead to fractured families.

Within households, members supporting different candidates create deep divisions, resulting in lasting resentment. Similarly, entire communities are torn apart during elections, as loyalty to opposing candidates sows rifts that endure long after the ballots are cast. It is deeply disheartening to witness communities unravel over trivial political differences.

When a candidate from one side wins, supporters of the opposing side are often shut out from the community’s benefits. Funds meant for the underprivileged are diverted by elected leaders for personal or political gain, further deepening the divide.

If this culture of division and self-interest continues unchecked, how can the state ever hope to thrive or progress? This is one of the most urgent issues of our time, yet too few have the courage to address it openly. I urge young, open-minded individuals to rise up, confront these challenges head-on, and work towards fostering a more united society and a brighter future for our state.

Delving into the root causes of these issues offers a profound learning experience, revealing many lessons along the way. In certain villages, the absence of basic amenities, poor transportation, and a lack of medical and emergency facilities create a harsh reality for residents.

Many live in the darkness, held back by ineffective leadership that fails to bring change, convincing them that life is an unending struggle and that access to basic services is a distant dream. Elected leaders must move beyond empty election rhetoric and confront the real-world challenges that people face on the ground.

Meanwhile, those who supported the victorious candidates often enjoy lavish lifestyles in urban areas for the next four years. With enough cunning, they may even manage to conceal their true identities and secure their survival, sometimes amassing wealth and power in the process.

Surprisingly, some individuals affiliated with insurgent groups also thrive in urban centers, enjoying the benefits of looted wealth or political favors. This is a visible reality in our state. Many of these individuals even send their children to metropolitan cities, providing them with better education and ensuring a more prosperous future for their families.

I would boldly contend that these insurgents are not true warriors for a cause, but rather self-interested individuals seeking to benefit from the very system they claim to oppose.

Building a Sustainable Future: Prioritizing Personal Growth Over Local Political Conflicts

Many young people today feel that without political leadership, their pursuit of a lasting future is uncertain. However, this is a misconception driven by the political dilemmas surrounding us. As we have seen in South India, the focus is shifting from government jobs to entrepreneurship. Young people are increasingly seeking personal freedom through earning a living and creating platforms to boost the state’s economy.

In contrast, in our region, many continue to rely on the hope of securing a government job, often resorting to bribery to establish themselves in these positions. This misguided focus perpetuates a cycle that limits our potential for growth and change. Our generation risks repeating the same patterns, resulting in stagnation instead of progress.

Empowering youth to embrace entrepreneurship and establish private businesses is crucial. We have abundant skilled resources capable of driving such initiatives. The government can only create a limited number of jobs each year, especially as the population continues to grow. With this in mind, relying solely on the government sector is not a sustainable solution.

We need to attract multinational companies (MNCs) and create a thriving private sector that generates more employment opportunities. However, for this to be successful, the state’s law and order situation must improve. Without a stable environment, companies will struggle to remain operational for long.

This is an urgent issue that both bureaucrats and elected officials should prioritize. Instead of being caught up in local political struggles, we should broaden our outlook and focus on building a future where Manipur becomes a place where people can thrive, innovate, and live with opportunities.

The insurgency problem could also be significantly reduced if the state leadership shifts its focus toward job creation in the private sector while simultaneously eliminating corruption from government departments. By empowering the youth, fostering entrepreneurship, and ensuring a stable economic environment, we can pave the way for long-term peace and prosperity.

The rise of communalism is often a consequence of misused political power and the scarcity of opportunities. Over the years, this sense of fragmentation and disenfranchisement has deeply affected communities, leading some to resort to violent means in an attempt to gain recognition for their long-suffered injustices.

While some insurgent groups arise out of legitimate grievances and a desire for change, others are driven by personal gain, jealousy, or financial incentives. The complexity of insurgency lies in its roots, shaped by various underlying factors. While some insurgents may genuinely seek long-term peace and justice, achieving those goals requires more than just militancy—it demands comprehensive political, social, and economic solutions.

To foster meaningful change, the region needs strong and visionary leadership capable of moving beyond the mistakes of past leaders. The damage caused by inadequate governance, corruption, and neglect has left the people of Manipur in a state of uncertainty and despair. This is precisely why reform in education and technology is paramount.

These sectors hold the potential to unlock vast opportunities for the youth, providing them with the tools to break free from the cycles of poverty and unrest. Education equips individuals with the knowledge to challenge outdated systems, while technology can be a powerful catalyst for innovation and growth.

When a population sees no future for itself—when education is inaccessible, when jobs are scarce, and when leaders fail to deliver progress—desperation sets in. In such an environment, people may resort to radical or unlawful actions, further destabilizing the state. This is where law and order break down, giving rise to violence and insurgency.

However, the cycle can only be broken by shifting the focus toward sustainable solutions, rooted in the empowerment of the younger generation. The future of Manipur hinges not on the current political leaders, but on the energy, creativity, and resilience of its youth. We must invest in their education, provide them with opportunities to innovate, and create an environment conducive to entrepreneurial growth.

Only through this kind of investment will we be able to create a prosperous, peaceful society. By empowering young people and fostering a culture of collaboration and progress, we can shift from a past of conflict and division to a future of unity, growth, and opportunity.
