A Brief Life Sketch Of (Late) Nishikanta
(Nganthoi) Yumnam
Nishikanta was born on Saturday, the 27 February 1971 at Dibong, Jiribam
as the first child of Shree (late) Yumnam Nimai Singh and Yumnam Ongbi
Nayani Devi.
His parents temporarily resided at Jiribam in connection with his
work. The family returned to their original home at Khagempalli
Panthak Keishamthong, Imphal and then he began his first schooling
at the Macha Leima School, Janmasthan, Yaiskul, Imphal.
In face of poor family conditions, he never lost heart in struggle to
keep himself busy with his studies as well as activities of various organisations.
In the year 1989,he passed P.U Sc. From Liberal College, Luwangsangbam
and T.D.C.Sc. (Physics) in 1993 from Manipur College, Imphal.

During his graduation, he was involved in the affairs of the student's
Union of the Manipur College and elected General Secretary. In the year
1994, he joined L.M.S .Law College, Imphal and was elected President of
its Students' Union, where he also installed the statue of Justice at
the college. In 1997, he passed L.L.B. and became a young lawyer.
While practicing law, he never missed any opportunity to involved himself
with a lot of other social organization and N.G.Os with activities as
varied as peace, communal harmony, student movement and animal welfare.
He visited other states of the country through the sponsorship extended
by various states and national organizations. He was also connected with
the National youth Project, New Delhi, R.K Sanatombi (Vivekananda Vidyalaya),
Pangie, People For Animal, Committee of peace and Integrity (COPAI), Committee
On Human Rights (COHR), All Manipur United Clubs Organization (AMUCO),
All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA), Young Lawyers Forum (YLF), Meitei
National Front (MNF), Manipur Students' federation (MSF), and was the
founder -president of the centre for legal education and co-operation
of youth (CLEMANCY).
On February 19th,2001,Nishikanta married Kumari Thokchom Rima (Bibicha)
Devi daughter of shree Th.Singhajit Singh, (retd), vice principal of Johnstone
Higher secondary school a resident of Chingamathak Thokchom Leikai, Imphal.
Nishikanta Yumnam was deeply concerned with the territorial integrity
of Manipur and was against the agreement between NSCN (I-M) and India
Government's cease-fire extension to Manipur beyond the Nagaland.
In the flare of incident of that fateful day of June 18,2001, he along
with other seventeen martyrs made the supreme sacrifice dauntlessly for
the cause of which he was firmly against and breathed his last.
O! Heroic son of Manipur, we all salute you!
Thousands will die and thousands will follow!
