Organizer-Scholars' Day *

SCHOLARS' DAY, a one-day gathering was held on 28th February, 2009 at the School of Physical Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The event was organized with the objective of exchanging ideas and research developments among all disciplines cutting across boundaries of Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Humanities.

The gathering was aimed not only at encouraging inter disciplinary studies but also to bridge the gap between various forms of inquiries, perspectives and knowledge production. A need was felt for organizing such a gathering since there has been hitherto no such event, bringing together researchers from different disciplines.

The academic event was attended by research scholars and research professionals from different disciplines.

The day-long seminar had four sessions. In the first session Prof. Bhagat Oinam of JNU gave the keynote address, dwelling on the various levels in which Science, Social Science and Philosophy are interrelated. This session had three other speakers: Monish, Umabati and Surjit who presented their papers on topics related to the changes and continuities in Obama's policies, the empowerment of women in Manipur and foreign policy of South Africa towards India respectively.

The second session covered various important aspects of Natural Sciences. It started with a special lecture by Dr. S. Somorendro Singh, Lecturer in D.U. on 'The Early Universe'. He gave an enlightening talk on the components that made up the Universe, the smallest constituents of matter etc. This was followed by Budhachandra with his talk on Brain dynamics, Chandrachani on cosmological scaling and finally, ended with Santinath enlightening the audience with his presentation on the aging behavior of agar-gelatin co-hydrogel.

The Social Science session again resumed post lunch with a special lecture by Dhiren Sadokpam, Guest Faculty, AJK Mass com., JMI, on Text, Image and Vision and spoke on how North East was presented in the National media and how it has been perceived. Three other interesting papers followed this. Thoinu dwelling on the current 'Korean wave' , Rojio on the poetic discourse in the songs of Tapta and Irina on a study of the Leikai clubs of Manipur.

The fourth and the final session started with Joylata speaking on the classification of forests and their management in Manipur. This was followed by Umeshkanta who spoke on Nonlinearity, Chaos and Synchrony in Dynamical Systems. Saratchandra presented the final paper of the day speaking on sustainability science. The event ended with a concluding remark by R. K. Brojen Singh.

In the final analysis, the event proved to be successful in accomplishing what it had intended to. The day-long event managed to bring together active researchers and professionals from different disciplines of knowledge. It provided a platform whereby they could share their ideas and discuss their research developments for the benefit of all.

The event truly lived up to its caption 'catalyzing and accelerating research forward' and everybody departed with contentment and a promise to take the initiation forward to the next level.
