Grants for Organising Training Courses in Research Methodology and Computer Applications in Social Science Research

The ICSSR as part of its research promotion activities, sponsors short-term training courses in research methodology in order to improve research skills and competence of the young social scientists to undertake research. Research institutions and college/university departments and other academic bodies are provided financial support to organise short-term training courses in research methodology and computer applications in social science research for the benefit of young researchers, teachers in college/universities and Ph.D. scholars. Training courses could be organised on general social science research methodology, discipline-specific research methodology, around themes of current interest cutting across disciplinary boundaries or in computer applications in social science research.

Target Group

The primary target group for training programme is young researchers (who may or may not be pursuing doctoral research),and teachers in colleges, university departments and academic institutions who are engaged in research, or are planning to undertake research.

How and When to Apply ?

The Application for organizing training courses should give details of the faculty and research profile of the institution/organization and details of proposed training course containing. a short introduction, objective of the training course, the target group, the duration and tentative dates, course content and topics to be covered with a detailed time-table, the list of faculty along with a budget to the ICSSR for its consideration. The application should be forwarded by the affiliating institution. The proposal for proposed training course should mention the name of the Course Dector, who would be responsible for conducting this course and to submit a Course Director’s Report after the completion of the training course.

All applications will be examined by the secretariat and evaluated by Expert Committee and Research Committee which meets from time to time for its consideration. The proposal must be submitted to the ICSSR at least three months in advance from the proposed dates.

Grants and Budget

The grants-in-aid is provided to cover expenditures to meet TA/DA expenses of participants and the faculty (both local and non-local);reading materials for participants; honorarium to the Course Director and faculty; cost of reference books to be purchased for the training course; postage and stationery charges; computer analysis charges (for training courses with a component of data processing) and over heads at five percent of the total estimated cost. For formulating budget the current guidelines on the training programme may be consulted.

The grant is released to the institution in two instalments. About eighty to eighty five percent of the grant is released as first instalment and remaining amount is released after the submission and acceptance of the Course Director's Report and audited statement of accounts.

Submission of Course Director's Report and Audited Statement of Accounts

The organisers are expected to submit the following materials/ documents to the ICSSR after the completion of the training course:

(a) Two complete sets of lectures/documents provided to participants during the training course.
(b) The audited statement of accounts and utilization certificate of the expenditure incurred of the sanctioned grant.
(c)
(d) Course Director's Report on the training course based on the evaluation done by the participants along with the filled in evaluation schedules.

Concept Note
Workshop for Research Students

Introduction

In the current academic practices in India, students' research has almost become an individual activity. For students, especially for those who are in universities in non-metropolitian locations, there are very few opportunities for discussing their research work with peer group and senior scholars. This also prevents them from engaging with serious theoretical and methodological debates that are currently part of the disciplines.

This workshop aims to address this gap specifically for students engaged in doctoral/M Phil reasearch in any of the Humanities or social science disciplines. Every year the workshop will carry a broad theme and invite applications from students whose doctoral researches are related to this theme. This year the theme of the workshop is 'Marginalization and Resistance'. The papers selected for this year will be broadly grouped under, though need not be restricted to, the following subthemes.

1. Questions of Identity – Conceptualising identity, political movements around identity, challenges raised by the concept and theoretical problems which the concept raises.

2. Process of Marginalisation – What is the process of marginalisation? How are they instituted and reproduced? What are its effects? Are questions of inclusion-exclusion central to understanding this process or are there other ways of articulating and dealing with marginalisation?

3. Understanding Resitance – Is it possible to understand resistance without understanding the nature of power? How does one see resistance - as necessary and progressive? Or, as constituted by power itself?

4. Practices of Representations – Is representation central to questions of power, and therefore, questions of marginalisation and resistance? Is representation just an add-on category which is reflective of the “real” or is reality itself available to us only through practices of representation? How does one theorise “reality” as well as “representation”?

Objectives

The objectives of this workshop are -

1. to provide inputs to the students who are in the planning stage of their doctoral research. The inputs would be about developing the theoretical and methodological framework of their research, conceptualization and forming research questions etc.

2. to provide inputs to the students who are currently in the middle of fieldwork/data collection. The inputs would be in terms of suggesting ways out of methodological or analytical bottlenecks.

3. to provide inputs to students who have finished fieldwork and are in the proscess of writing. The inputs would be in relation to the analysis, writing and organization of chapters

Selection of applicants

Applications would be invited from doctoral/MPhil research students across India. Every aplication should include the CV, abstract and research proposal/paper/chapter and a small note (300 words) about their expectations from the workshop. In all 15 participants would be selected. The last date of sending the applications would be 30th November, 2012. The shortlisted applicants would be informed by 5th December, 2012.

The structure of the workshop

The workshop would be spread over five days. The fifteen participants would be divided into four groups. Every resource person will work with a group of 3-4 students. Every day there would be five presentations (resource person's presentation + four students' presentations) from a single group. The first presentation would be made by the resource person in the morning followed by four student presentations, spread over a single day.

There would be two discussants for every paper – the resource person and another student from the group. The student discussant will lead the presentation and author student would respond, followed by a discussion and concluding comments by the senior discussant. Reading material specific to their respective topics would be identified and circulated along with proposals/papers/chapters among all the students in a group.
