INTRODUCTION

In this era of globalization, Indian education is passing through a significant phase where teachers are learning various theories and techniques for effective teaching. Capacity building or development is the process whereby individuals, groups, and organisations enhance their abilities to mobilize and use resources in order to achieve their objectives on a sustainable basis. The resource situation of social science research is varied. Some enjoy relatively large and welldeveloped support for social science research capacity from government, industry and international network of collaborators, while others have very limited resources. There are many pressing issues in this regard. Are there enough researchers with the necessary education and professional skills to conduct research? Do they have the ability to identify research themes that are relevant to society, and to develop research questions? Do they possess, do they have the necessary skills to develop research proposals? Can they lead research teams, and communicate research results to improve public understanding? Can they inform / debate and advise policy? Capacity development programs challenge these needs to be looked into and it is necessary to provide inputs in order to improve their capacities of research.

Since the universities are involved in research at various levels, there is a pressing need to train the young researchers of universities who can complete quality research in time. The young teachers also need to be encouraged to take up research at various levels which will contribute to policy making and decision making to various organizations concerned with inclusive development. Faculty members from the state/central universities and colleges will be benefitted from this capacity building workshop. The progamme is also helpful to newly joined faculties who do not have much exposure in current research and teaching.

OBJECTIVES
o To facilitate the understanding of the basic quantitative and qualitative research methods in social science research.
o To develop the capacity for conceptualising and writing research proposals.
o To enhance skills of preparing an appropriate research design including - conducting an overview of literature, formulating research questions and hypotheses, collection of information and analysis,
o To enhance the awareness for writing a research paper for publication.
o To develop the capacity for planning and writing a book.
o To update the skill for writing grant applications.
o To make them understand basic Econometrics, panel data handling and analysis.
o To provide hands-on experience of SPSS, and E-Views for Econometrics and Time Series Analysis
o To make them aware as to how qualitative and quantitative techniques through econometrics, time series and panel data can be used in classroom teaching and research
o To provide ideas about upcoming researchable areas using advance methodology.

FOCUS

The Two-Week Capacity Building Workshop for faculty members on Applications of Quantitative and Qualitative Technique in Social Sciences and Humanities Research is aimed at providing knowledge of essential tools and techniques through classroom exercises with practical data. With the knowledge of operation of computer software packages like SPSS, STATA and E-Views, the teachers, can link classroom teaching with research and self generated new knowledge.

PEDAGOGY

Combination of expert lecture and hands on training sessions on qualitative methods of research as well as qualitative techniques through Software’s like SPSS, E-Views, and STATA etc.

FOR WHOM
The workshop is designed for faculty members in social science and humanities having less than/ up to five years of teaching experience and who are currently involved in teachings and research in social science and humanities of Central/ state Institution/ University Department, etc.

PARTICIPANTS
Maximum of 30 participants will be shortlisted for this Two-Week Capacity Building Workshop on “Applications of Quantitative and Qualitative Technique in Social Sciences and Humanities Research”. The committee will select the participant on the basis of their teaching and research experience. The committee decision on selection of participant is final and binding. The selected participant will be provided the two III A/C train fare in the shortest route. Local travel allowance won’t be given to participants. Participant will be also provided food and lodging facilities in double sharing basis in first come first serve in institute guest house (South Block Guest House).

BENEFITS
The workshop is to enable the participants to learn the important tools and methods of social science research. The workshop is also aimed at answering the questions such as how the project proposal can be written and executed; how can risk and uncertainty be minimized in projects, and so on.

HOW TO APPLY?
Interested applicants need to apply on the prescribed enclosed format which must be duly endorsed by the Head of the Department/Institution. Duly filled applications with a recent passport size photo should be sent along with a demand draft (DD) of Rs. 500. DD should be taken on any Nationalized Bank in favour of “Continuing Education, NIT, Rourkela,” payable at SBI, REC Campus Branch, Rourkela (Code: 2109) and send by Speed Post only addressed to: Dr. Narayan Sethi, Programme Co-Director and Asst. Professor, Dept. of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, Odisha, Pin-769008, India. However, one scanned copy of all the documents/requirements may also be sent through Email to the Programme director or co-director as an advance copy. Nevertheless, the candidate will be considered for final short listing only after receiving the hard copy of all the documents within stipulated time period through speed post only. Applications received after the stipulated last date will not be considered. Participants will get e-mail confirmation about their participation.

Resources persons are eminent and accomplished scholars drawn from reputed institutions.

CERTIFICATE
The participants will be provided certificates on successful completion of the programme.
