Manipur has always been a mosaic of diverse ethnic communities, where the hills and valleys complement each other. Proper identification and naming of communities have existed since before British colonisation without dispute. The Constitution of India’s Scheduled Tribes list for Manipur (1956) clearly includes Thadou as a distinct tribal community.
In view of the continuing ethnic tensions following the 2023 violence, the Thadou community requires proper identification and protection. TSA places on record that following the understanding reached on 6th August, 2025 between Thadou represented by Thadou Inpi Manipur and Meitei represented by Manipur Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) viz. COCOMI, AMUCO, FOCS & AT in Imphal, the situation has gradually improved.
The sacrifice of the Manipur Peace Martyr, Pu Nehkam Thadou, in Assam in 2025, and that of the three recently martyred Thadou Church leaders in a targeted gun ambush on 13th May, 2026 in Manipur, are remembered with honour.
Imphal is progressively becoming safer for Thadou people for transit, medical treatment, education, employment, and habitation. However, TSA strongly advises all Thadou individuals and families who do not identify as "Kuki" and have no connection with Kuki ideology to remain in regular contact with the TSA Helpline while travelling to or residing in Imphal and valley areas, in order to avoid complications amid ongoing ethnic tensions and the possibility of escalation at any time.
TSA reiterates the distinct historical, cultural, and social identity of the Thadou community and appeals to all for peace, mutual respect, and communal harmony.
