FILM SYNOPSIS:
[23 min / eng subtitled / 2006]
Twelve women strip themselves naked on the streets of Manipur, in protest For five years a young woman has been on a fast-to-death demanding justice; she is kept under arrest and is forcibly nose-fed. Other women have lost their sanity fighting for justice for their children killed in custody.
Manipur is a state in Indias North-East region, riven for decades by insurgency and violence. The Indian government has attempted to crush the insurgency through its military might; shielded by by undemocratic laws. Arrests, torture, extra-judicial killings Manipuri people have faced them all. Yet, little is heard about Manipur and its troubles across the nations landscape. This is a place that mainland India has marginalised; that the world has forgotten.
Tales from the Margins travels to this remote, strife-torn corner of India to seek out stories of uncommon courage in the face of despair. To help articulate the anger and anguish of Manipuri women and to document their extraordinary protests. And through their lives, to focus the spotlight on a vast human tragedy.

ABOUT KAVITA JOSHI
Kavita Joshi is an independent documentary filmmaker based in Delhi.
Her first film, Some Roots Grow Upwards (2002 / 52 min) explored the work of acclaimed theatre director Ratan Thiyam against a socio-political context. It won the Best Film and two other honours at a national level awards in India. It has been screened at Vikalp Films for Freedom 2004; Karafest 2004 Karachi; KIMFF 2004 Kathmandu; HFF Amsterdam 2005; and was shown in Lausanne, New York, Antwerp, Kolkata, Delhi and other cities.
Untitled: 3 Narratives (2005-6 / 16 min) is a set of 3 films on women and conflict. It won the III Best Film at VIBGYOR 2006 Kerala.
Her film Naani (Grandmother) is currently under-production.
Apart from documentaries, Kavita Joshi also conducts workshops on filmmaking.
