Manipur University has been rocked to the bottom by the series of crisis since the day one when the former Vice Chancellor Prof H Tombi resigned from the post to accept a post not befitting his stature. Now RIMS Director Prof N Bijoy has been appointed to fill up the vacuum created by the resignation of Prof Tombi. Now many teachers of the University are saying that they cannot accept Prof Bijoy as Vice Chancellor. In the past there were never brouhaha over the appointment of Vice Chancellor of the Manipur University. Does the appointment really violate the procedures that could have been followed? Does he lack the requisite qualification heeded for holding on to the post of Vice Chancellor? Manipur University should rest in the hands of able men who can sail it out smoothly from the troubled water? But our reckoning is that no matter whether Bijoy steps in or not the possibility of the University having smooth sailing in the next 10 years is a distant dream? Because this university does not receive the kind of support it deserves from the Govt of Manipur. Bureaucratic tangle always stands in the way of allocation of fund to the University. Even the man with the best brain will find himself handicapped in manning the post of VC of the Manipur University. Because we are living in a society where we value money more than anything else is. Though it was not made public one can come to the logical conclusion if not for money why should they indulge in mark tampering. The evil trend of earning sleazy money has permeated everywhere. It has affected everybody. More unfortunate is that nothing was done to check intrusion of this evil trend in the academic arena. Is Bijoy really a tainted man? But he said that during his tenure as Director of RIMS he showed the door of exit from RIMS to many doctors of the rank of professors for indicating propensity to earn extra money by working at public clinics or hospitals. This however should not count up as a factor for installing him in the coveted post of Vice Chancellor of Manipur University. Bijoy had been tasted, as Director of RIMS and he did not fail in this field. Will he not be given a chance in the University? Do they, belonging to the teaching parlance of the University, consider him as a fox among the bigger animals? Let him prove whether he is a fox or a lion? Give a public a chance to take a decision on the matter.
