Shija opens door to South East Asia

Keeping in line with the India’s Look East Policy, Shija Hospitals and Research Institute in its initiative to open its facilities to the populace of South East Asia has treated 9 Myanmar nationals. This initiative was possible with the cooperation and help from Home Department, Government of Manipur, Office of the Director General of Police and Mr. L. Basanta, Social Worker. The DGP, Manipur Police extended his support in terms logistics and clearance from authorities. Mr. L. Basanta extended his support to our initiative by involving himself personally in terms of transportation of the patients and dissemination of information.

9 Myanmar nationals arrived at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute on 8th June 2010. Of the total 9 patients, 5 patients are for Cleft Lip and Palate. The 5 patients have come to receive the free treatment under Smile Train Shija Cleft Project- Myanmar Mission initiative and the other 4 patients are for other speciality.

During the press conference organised at the Auditorium of the hospital on 12th June 2010, Dr. Kh Palin, Managing Director of Shija Hospitals appealed to the Government of India, Government of Manipur and the Myanmar authorities to relax the entry of Myanmar nationals to Manipur for treatment related purpose. He also informed that the inclusion of Healthcare in the Indo-Myanmar border trade items will be a boon to the initiative.

Shija Hospitals and Research Institute has the requisite infrastructure to render the needed healthcare services. The only barrier at this juncture is the red tape being imposed by the Government of both the countries. If this could be removed and the traveling made more hassle free than Manipur in general and Shija Hospitals in particular has lot of potential to develop healthcare tourism.
