From Gandhi to Sharmila Campaign
3 Day Fast in Solidarity with Irom Sharmila
Imphal, 24th – 26th February, 2010
Supported by
Apunba Sharmila Kanba-Lup, National Alliance of People’s Movement, Asha Parivar, INSAF, Just Peace Foundation, Human Rights Alert & Reachout
In November 2009, poet and activist Irom Sharmila from Manipur entered the 10th year of her hunger strike demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA). She started her fast soon after the Indian Army massacred ten innocent civilians in Malom, Manipur. On 6 November 2000, she was arrested by the police and charged with attempt to commit suicide under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code. Her health deteriorated gradually and she did not accept even a single drop of water except being forcefully fed by nasogastric intubation.
This law designed for certain section of nation Muslim in Jammu & Kashmir and the people of North East has already been asked to repeal by UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 6th March 2007 for its racially triggered law to its own citizen. Ironically, India build up military to defend ‘ the largest democracy’ in the world where prosecution of state perpetrators of violence including rape and murder are seems to be legitimate by the government, no case has ever been brought to court. This complete silence of government and the rise of fascist democracy is extremely condemnable.
At this juncture we express our utmost support and solidarity to the heroic struggle of Irom Sharmila and demand for :
- The immediate repeal of the AFSPA
- The removal of military from schools and universities compound and residential areas
- The prosecution of army personal who commited murder, rape, torture and killing of innocent people
We request you to join us in Imphal or organize a simultaneous solidarity fast at your place.
