NPMHR 32nd Foundation Day and General Assembly Held in Tahamzam from 9-10 Sept 2010
- Naga Peoples Movement For Human Rights -
10, September 2010
The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) celebrated its 32nd Foundation Day on 9th September 2010 at Tahamzam (Senapati) with well wishers from the United Naga Council, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur, the Senapati District Students Association and the the Poumai Students Association.
Members reflected on the successes and failure in the course of its journey and recognized the contributions made by members in the past and present. The celebration also observed a two-minute silence in memory and honour of Mr. Wordsworth Zingkhai and Dr. U.A Shimray, members of NPMHR who passed away recently.
Recalling the journey of NPMHR, senior members shared the difficulties and challenges faced in its formation and growth as a movement. When NPMHR was formed on 9th Sept 1978, it took upon itself the task of initiating an organised struggle for ensuring and safeguarding amongst others; the right to live together as a people; free access to all places of learning; maximum participation of the people in the making of decisions affecting their lives; freedom from socio-economic exploitation, political domination and military repression; against anti-democratic practices and the dismantling of institutions and social values which legitimize and perpetuate these within our society; against the imposition of undesirable alien legal systems and socio-cultural concepts and ways of life.
NPMHR also acknowledged the renewed challenges faced by the Nagas and other peoples in the face of globalisation, militarization and developmental issues faced by indigenous peoples in the present geopolitical scenario.
NPMHR renewed its commitment to the human rights framework for peace building and creating space for dialogue between communities.
The NPMHR also held its General Assembly (GA) where it consensually elected a new Secretary General with the completion of the incumbent’s tenure. The incoming Secretary General, Dr. Gina Shangkham is well known for her contributions to the cause of the Nagas. In the past, she held the post of the President, Naga Women’s Union. She takes over from Dr. N. Venuh who had held the post since 2007 whose contribution to NPMHR is worth commending.
