NECEER's ENVIRO LECTURE SERIES
Northeast India is the most biodiversity rich region in the country. It is recognised as biodiversity hotspot due to the presence of large number of endangered and endemic species. Northeast India comprises of eight states, viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. It occupies 7.7% of India’s total geographical area supporting 50% of the flora (approx 8000 species), of which 31.58% (approx 2526 species) is endemic. It is a transitional zone between the Indian, Indo-Burman-Malaysian and Indo-Chinese regions. It is also a part of the Vavilovian centre of biodiversity and origin of many important cultivated plant species and some domesticated animals. The region is described as the ‘cradle of flowering plants’ because of its diversified angiosperms. However, the region is the most neglected part of the country and even fellow countrymen are unaware of the region and its rich biodiversity. The region is yet be explored thoroughly and connected with rest of the country. The time has come to create platform where the Northeast India can showcase their diversity and rest of the country to know Northeast India. Enviro Lecture Series is one such initiative launched by NECEER, Imphal in association with Department of Biotechnology, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and Delhi Greens to promote conservation of rich biodiversity of Northeast India. The lecture series will highlight the biodiversity richness of the region and their present threats, ecotourism potential of the region, change in the environment and ecosystem due to the change in climate and geological factors and recent developments in the region. The participants will get the change to know in detail the potentials of Northeast India. NECEER, Imphal has been recognized by its biodiversitY conservation initiatives, publications such as NeBIO Research Journal and Ecotone Newsletter and as one of the most efficient organizations of its kind in NE India. NECEER has already successfully organised Nationwide Save Sangai Campaign at five metropolitan cities of the country for the conservation of endangered Sangai - dancing deer of Manipur. NECEER is involved in several projects related to the conservation of fragile ecosystems in Northeast India and support community based ecotourism programme in Sikkim.
