A woman from Manipur attacked in Kolkata; Authority remains inactive
New Delhi, December 18, 2010
A woman from Manipur Miss Heigrujam Indubala (33), presently working in the Howrah Railway Station as Sr. TE, and who was on a duty was brutally attacked by one Adinath, a GRP male constable, on 20 November 2010 at around 8 a.m.
The immediate cause of the brutal attack was the wild aggression of the chauvinist Adinath while obstructing Indubala from realizing dues from two trespassers who were found to be without tickets / pass on the platform. The helpless Indubala was knocked down into unconsciousness and in due course of indiscriminate lathi charge she was inflicted upon with severe injury on the head and several parts of the body. She was hospitalized for six days and is still undergoing through medical treatment.
Except a few Bengali vernacular newspapers none of the mainstream media had covered the incident. Despite the victim’s formal submission of: Special Report to the Sr. Divl. Comml. Manager, Eastern Railway, Howrah, dated 23 November 2010; First Information Report to the Superintendent of Railway Police, Howrah, dated 25 November 2010; FIR Reminder to the Superintendent of Railway Police, Howrah, dated 8 December 2010; and Memorandum to the Human Rights Commission, Kolkata, dated 13 December 2010; the concerned authorities had neither responded positively to the victim nor taken up any known legal action against the culprit.
It is worth reminding that the aboriginal peoples from the Northeast, particularly the women who have come to mainland India in search of job or to pursue education have become victims of racial discrimination by the mayangs. The racial attacks have become institutionalized when the Indian law enforcing agencies and media had failed to take up appropriate action to address the grievances of the racial victims and punish the guilty.
In such a situation the Government of Manipur is expected to be proactive and responded in favour of the Manipuri victims who are struggling without any support and rehabilitation.
