Burmese Community and Supporters [Hold People’s Elections]
India-based Burmese democratic forces will be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 1990 democratic elections in Burma with a demonstration and people’s voting at Jantar Mantar. The event is part of a Global Day of Action that will be marked by activists from Burma and international supporters.
What: Demonstration and Peoples’ Elections
Where: Jantar Mantar, New Delhi
When: 11:00 am on 27th May 2010
Burmese communities and their supporters around the world are calling on international governments including Indian government and the national governments of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to denounce the 2010 elections in Burma and reject the results unless the regime changes course. For these elections to be truly democratic, the regime must first:
1. Release all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
2. Cease hostilities against ethnic and democracy groups; and,
3. Engage in inclusive dialogue with key stakeholders from democracy groups and ethnic nationalities, including a review of the 2008 Constitution.
The Global Day of Action is part of the Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections. The campaign was initiated by the Ten Alliances of Burma’s democracy and ethnic rights movement, representing the most broad-based and multi-ethnic cooperation of political and civil society organizations from inside Burma and in exile working for national reconciliation, peace, and freedom in Burma. It is supported by over 150 organizations around the world.
