New Delhi, Sep 24: BJP President Shri Nitin Gadkari honoured World Women's Boxing Champion MC Mary Kom at a function at the party headquarters here today. At a function organized by the party's North East India Sampark Cell, Shri Gadkari presented a cheque of Rs One Lakh and a memento to Ms Kom, who had won the Gold Medal in the World Women's Boxing Championship in the 48 kg class beating her Romanian opponent Duta Seluta in Bridgetown, Barabados on Saturday.

In a touching gesture, Shri Gadkari also presented an airbag and toys for the twin children of Ms Mary Kom. It may be recalled that in a media interview, the Manipuri braveheart had mentioned that she couldn't get time to even buy toys for her children in Delhi due to her hectic schedule.

The BJP President also honoured Bronze Medalist at the championship Ms Kavita Chahal from Haryana at the function by presenting a memento and Rs 51,000/- to her. Describing Ms Kom and Ms Chahal as "India's Pride", Sh Gadkari said the party had always encouraged sporting talent across the country and would continue to do so in future also.

He also hailed the good work being done by the newly established North East Cell under the dynamic leadership of Sh Deodhar. Former Cricketer and party's National Secretary Sh Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was present on the occasion, hailed the two boxers' achievements in his characteristic style and said the nation was proud of their win and the party would always support the cause of sports and sportsmen and women.

In her thanksgiving speech, Ms Kom expressed her pleasant surprise over a political party taking such initiatives and said she was impressed by the BJP's efforts to reach out to the people of the North East through the North East India Sampark Cell, headed by National Convenor Sh Sunil Deodhar.

She also extended her best wishes to Ms Chahal to win the gold medal in the next championships. Ms Mary Kom also presented a traditional Naga shawl, a spear and an ornamental ethnic garland to Shri Gadkari as a mark of appreciation.

Ms Kom was accorded a rousing reception by leaders and activists of the Cell (NEISC) on her arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on September 21. The North-East Sampark Cell of the BJP was launched on August 23, 2010 in the presence of senior BJP leaders including Shri L K Advani, Shri Nitin Gadkari and Shri Arun Jaitley, with a view to reach out to people of the region settled across the country and solve the manifold problems faced by them.
