Imphal, August 06:
The problems of shortage of food and other essential commodities being faced by the people of Manipur following the imposition of indefinite economic blockade along the National Highways by ANSAM for the last 47-days has been apprised to the Special Rapporteur of UN High Commission on Human Rights Mr Jean Ziegler.
In a letter written to Mr Ziegler, convenor of the Citizens for Security of Essential Commodities (C-SEC) LC Jenine has also invited him to visit Manipur during his forthcoming visit to India in the latter part of this month so that he can personally study the situation here.
This information was disclosed by Kangjam Maharabi UVYC of United Voluntary Youth Council (UVYC), which is a constituent of C-SEC while talking to media persons at the MAFYF office today.
He said C-SEC is an outcome of the workshop held at Hotel Excellency yesterday with the main objectives of fighting scarcity of foods and other essential commodities, escalation of their prices and to discourage all armed or unarmed groups from using the denial of food supply to any population as a pressure tactic to bargain for any group interest.
The day-long workshop held under the theme of Rights to food and other essential commodities in the present crisis in Manipur was attended by 56 representatives of 38 different organisations, he informed.
Apart from MAFYF and other organisations which have jointly organised the workshop are Agent for Social Change, Human Rights Alert, Human Rights Law Network and Universal Education and Well-being.
