MMR Board President arrested for raising slogan in House

Imphal, July 29: The President of the All Manipur Meitei Mayek Research and Training Board, Khangembam Basanta Singh, 31, son of Ibomcha of Heirangoithong Naoriya Pakhanglakpa today shouted slogans at the gallery of the Manipur Legislative Assembly after the House was about to be adjourned after paying tribute to Krishan Kant, Vice President of India who died on Saturday.

He was immediately arrested and taken to the custody.

He shouted Meitei Mayek should be implemented and Meitei Mayek should be incorporated in the currency notes.

Before he completed the second sentence, he was stopped by the Assembly Secretariat security and taken into custody.

When the latter questioned what he intended to say he said he wanted to say Meitei Mayek should be incorporated in the Indian currency notes.

When asked if he knew what he did tantamount to breach of privilege of House he said he knows the consequences of what he did.

He said he is ready to face all the actions which will be taken up against him.

So many resolutions were passed for the development of the Mayek, he said.

An agreement was signed on 7th July 1999 but the state government is not doing anything to introduce Meitei Mayek in schools.

He will be in the police custody.
