Security beefed up to combat UG threats

Imphal, April 09: In view of the restrictions and bans clamped by different underground outfits on the ensuing 14th Lok Sabha polls, maximum State security forces have been deployed in the two districts of Imphal.

While two underground outfits - Kanglei Yawol Kana Lup (KYKL) and Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) have imposed bans on the BJP and the Congress respectively.

United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has imposed a total ban on all activities related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The proscribed United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) has also imposed a ban on the candidature of NCP's Outer candidate Holkhomang Haokip.

On the other hand banned PREPAK has already warned of attacking the Ministers, MLAs and the MPs if they fail to openly denounce the excesses of the Central forces by April 10.In view of the numerous diktats, "We have deployed all the available State forces in both the districts of Imphal particularly in the main town said a high ranking police official when contacted by The Sangai Express.

Search operations are being conducted regularly to flush out UGs and also to check out the entry of militants in the town, he said adding that police commandos of both the districts are being confined in the town areas to prevent subversive activities of the militants.

Because of the lack of security personnel in the State, Central security forces including the BSF and CRPF sent by the Centre for the upcoming polls, are being deployed in Thoubal and Bishnupur dist, he added.

If needed some of the Central forces which are suppose to arrive here would be deployed in the capital districts after due consultation with the Home authorities, he said.

In the meantime campaigning, canvassing and all other election related activities have almost come to a standstill in the last few days as a result of the ban imposed by different proscribed outfits.

Commenting on the deployment of security escorts for the candidates, he stated that escorts would be provided to the candidates after the withdrawal date which falls on April 10.
