Guwahati, July 31: The North East Students Organisation today demanded immediate suspension of economic blockade in Manipur launched by the All Naga Students Association, Manipur considering sufferings of the people.

The NESO urges the Naga Students Federation (NSF) to take up the matter with the ANSAM and ensure that the economic blockade was lifted in the interest of the people, its chairman Samujjal Bhattacharya told reporters.

This was a resolution passed by the umbrella organisation of the student body of the NE region in its executive council meeting here yesterday, Bhattacharya said.

In another resolution, the NESO also called on the Manipur Government to start a dialogue with the concerned organisations to end the current political impasse.

The student body demanded the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act which has been the longstanding demand of various organisations of Manipur who were involved in widespread protests in the state following the alleged rape and murder of Manorama Devi by AR.

Bhattacharya said the meet also decided to prevail on the All Manipur Students Union not to adopt repressive measures in view of the ANSAM-sponsored economic blockade.

The NESO, he said, urged the Central government to formulate a white paper in the look East policy which aimed at the economic development of the region.

On the controversy over the striking down of the IMDT act by the Supreme Court, the NESO urged the Group of Ministers to desist from framing any alternative legislation in place of the defunt act.
